New York Nights
With: Roger Kellaway & Red Mitchell
Gemini Records, 1992

"Wentzel has one of those voices with horn-like phrasing and an original sound that crosses the old time blue moan of an Ethel Waters with a naive purity. She brings a lazy sense of wonder to songs like Kellaway's "New York Nights" and "I should care" that commands your attention. [...] The combination sounds simple but it works consistently magic even on "Lush life". That song may be reaching the saturation point but the combination of Kellaway's wordly piano and Wentzel's strong voice wring a little more magic out of it. Their transformation of an unhackneyed tune like Leonard Bernstein's "Lucky To Be Me" into a wailing blues is remarkable. This is a mesmerizing trio but Magni Wentzel sounds like she'd be worth hearing in any context."

"A very elegant singer with good taste, diction and pitch, Wentzel has a classical background as both singer and guitarist but her skill is such that this never really makes its presence felt in her jazz performances. She swings with a nicely relaxed air and on ballads she gets inside the songs with never a hint that she is singing in a foreign language. Her choice of material is good with songs that are familiar, but mostly without being overdone, mingling with a few that are too rarely performed."
